How much training does a Carer really need?

Depending on who you ask, you may well be very surprised by the answer you get...

In the social care industry, where staff are supporting vulnerable human beings, we think that a Carer actually never stops learning. We asked some of our more recent new starters about the standard of training they'd received with other care companies, and were genuinely shocked at some of the things we heard:

  • One person said that they were emailed 20 multiple choice questions, and needed to answer only 50% correctly to pass.

  • Another told us they were given a list of links to YouTube videos, which would teach them 'all they needed to know' to be able to deliver a good standard of care.

  • A third told us they were offered a job after a five minute phone call, and offered NO TRAINING before they were due to start their first shift.

When we set up the Whispers Academy earlier this year, our goal was to establish an environment where new and existing staff would receive an exceptional level of training. When a new starter joins Whispers they are enrolled onto an intensive two day induction course at our HQ in Colden Common, where our Company Trainer Steve delivers a training program that will enable them to become great Carers. We also regularly upskill our existing staff, ensuring that our high standards are maintained.

We're currently hiring so if you're an experienced Carer looking for your next step, or if you've never worked in care but would like to start, why not join #TeamWhispers and get the very best training and ongoing support! Find out more on our Careers page.
